We’re reducing cycle times and saving money because of APEX!

I was looking for better rework tools and for solutions to reduce the oxidation rate on soldering tips. At the IPC Show, I was able to compare products and eventually find the ones with the precision, control and functionality to meet business needs. The ultimate impact on a company is in the quality of reworks, reduced cycle times, and significant savings.

For the work I do, attending relevant committee meetings was very valuable to help us keep up with industry trends. Education and training are critical elements for the success of our organization, particularly in such fundamental skills as electronics assembly, hand soldering, rework, repair, modification and inspection. I’ll be back in 2008 to help keep our corporation at peak performance.

Like many other professionals in the electronics interconnect industry, Zenaida receives countless catalogues from equipment/tool suppliers. But only looking at the pictures and reading the information is not much of a help to her. “Having the equipment and tools available to try on, was very valuable. I could see the operational capability of the units in real time and on concrete applications.”

Perhaps the greatest benefit of attending the IPC shows for Zenaida is networking, “Meeting people from the industry and being able to discuss topics of interest, share ideas, address questions and keep up with the latest developments, “ is invaluable to her.

For the work she does, attending relevant committee meeting is very important, “… I can discuss the training curriculum and what changes/improvements we can make in order to keep up with industry trends.”

Education and training are critical elements for the success of her organization, “… particularly in such fundamental skills as electronics assembly, hand soldering, and inspection. Participation in IPC programs has been crucial to provide standardized, industry-accepted skills in as fast and efficient a way as possible.”

“The only way to be informed at all times about the changes in the industry, and the new methods and tools that are available, is by getting involved in the game — actively participating to conferences, workshops, shows.”

Zenaida’s Advice to New Attendees --- If you want your company to be profitable, the IPC shows are the only events where you can learn from the industry professionals, come across ultimate technology, find people and resources that can help you do your job better. Close

Enigma Interconnect Inc., Burnaby, BC Canada

David Smart is President of Enigma Interconnect Inc. in Burnaby, BC Canada

As president of a company that manufactures PCBs in Vancouver, David Smart looks for opportunities to meet with colleagues, share experiences and discuss issues that affect the industry. More...

Every year that I attend the IPC Presidents meetings, I come away with ideas to improve our process, solutions to address specific problems and a better understanding of what to expect from our customer and suppliers." But that is just part of the equation, according to Smart, "Then, to see all the different suppliers and manufacturers at the same time, at the same place, not only saves us a great deal of time and money, but it also begins to solidify our options. We can better evaluate what is the best fit for us, and do it in a fraction of the time otherwise required."

"The IPC Shows have guided our long-term planning and short-term investments. We have watched technologies develop, change, succeed and fail from one year to the next, and this has helped us identify those that would benefit us and our customers. To be aware of what your customer will ask for, and to be ready with a solution is the key element of servicing them, and succeeding in business."

"When we share the successes and failures of different experiences, we are better equipped to meet the challenges of the future. Finding out what didn’t work for others is as important as what did work. We have stayed away from some technologies based upon discussions we’ve had with colleagues at the IPC meetings."

"From a board manufacturing perspective, the IPC show is unique in that it brings us together with our suppliers, competitors and customers in one venue. When we see what challenges are facing our customers, we can better position ourselves to offer solutions. As we see the new tools and technologies being offered to them, we can ensure we can continue to meet their needs."

When it comes to size, Smart says that it doesn’t matter how large or small the company is, "I am always surprised to find that many of the same issues challenging us, also affects companies much bigger and smaller than ours — and there is a great deal to be learned from how both deal with them."

David says he will definitely be back to the Shows in 2008 — that’s smart thinking! Close

We’re expanding into a new market with technology we found at IPC Printed Circuits Expo!

There was definitely business we were turning away because we couldn’t offer via hole filling technology — that’s about to change! With the information acquired from the show, we will now have an edge over our competitors. Implementation of this technology opens up a whole new market for us with more opportunities for our company to acquire new business and increase sales. In the future, as the need arises from customer demand, we will be able to respond with knowledgeable answers and a viable solution.

George knows that to stay on top of industry changes and new technology innovations, a visit to the IPC shows is key. "Unlike any other event in the world, the IPC shows give companies like mine very focused attention from the suppliers on the exhibit floor.  The technical knowledge that marketing people try to convey in a brochure just can’t compare to the technical knowledge gained from face-to-face interactions at the show."

"The combination of the technical conference with the exhibition gives us foresight on up-and-coming products, processes and materials. We’ll be back to see what’s new in 2008!"

George’s advice to anyone attending the show — Before you go to the show, review your company’s day-to-day challenges and the demands of your customers. When you arrive at the show, take time to look through the show directory to find the educational sessions that are going to answer your technical questions and identify the exhibitors that may be able to help you solve your problems.  Then, focus all your time and attention on just that. You’ll walk away with the answers you seek and much more — foresight on what’s coming in the future, new products, new processes and new materials. Close

We saved about 12 days of work and $6,000 in travel expenses at APEX!

We evaluated AOI suppliers at the show. We went from booth to booth to check out machine attributes, get a good feel about the latest and greatest in manufacturing innovations, and learn about a new revolutionary approach to AOI. Most importantly, now I have better vision of the directions that we need to take.

With the information from the show, not only were we able to purchase $100,000 worth of AOI equipment, we also were able to downselect vendors for our selective soldering project. This show is a tremendous resource for information, and developing contacts. We plan to be back in 2008.

Bill’s role is to develop the processes, procedures and work instructions to build electronic hardware for the systems that Moog sells. ”Unlike other events, the IPC Shows offer a huge plus in that you have the ability to attend standards development meetings and attend an equipment show at the same time. Bill’s advice to new attendees: “While some might dismiss attending a show as a ‘couple of days off from work’, you need to develop an approach to the show to get something out of it. If you do that, the show is a tremendous resource for information and developing contacts. I know we were exhausted after just two days at the show.”

Hewlett Packard, Roseville, CA

JD Brown is a Master Engineer with Procurve Networking Business by Hewlett Packard in Roseville, CA

APEX saved me countless hours and a lot of headaches!

As a master engineer in the new product introduction group, JD Brown relies on APEX to help him keep ProCurve Networking by Hewlett Packard’s manufacturing centers worldwide ready to assemble new packages and new products. "The show offers the perfect combination of technical knowledge and real world solutions. I can always count on seeing all the top manufacturers. Seeing the equipment on the show floor spared me hours of chasing down information and a lot of headaches."

The ProCurve Networking business unit of HP delivers wired and wireless enterprise networking products, services and solutions. The foundation for ProCurve’s business model is the Adaptive Networks strategy in which networks are adaptive to users, applications and an organization’s needs.

In a few days at the IPC shows, JD is able to tackle a year’s worth of challenges for his company. "The industry today is faced with a very dynamic state with respect to what Pb-free alloy is best. We are faced with challenges given the current SAC alloys we are using — understanding what work has, and has not, been done helps us in sorting out what options are viable to investigate."

"The caliber of people presenting the technical training is very high. Being able to learn from these experts is invaluable to our business. Best of all, it saves us money and time by learning from other technical experts and leveraging what we can to focus the investigations and experimentation we do more narrowly."

JD’s advice to attendees — "There is a wealth of knowledge available through the technical sessions, training, standards meetings, and representatives on the show floor. It takes time, and an open mind, to glean everything you can. It is well worth the cost to stay a few days and learn everything you can. I find myself referring back to the proceedings many times during the year as various questions come up." Close

Senior Systems Technology Inc., Palmdale, CA

Richard Kudlicki is a Senior Mfg. Engineer with Senior Systems Technology Inc., in Palmdale, CA

Senior Systems Technology is a premier domestic provider of high-end electronic manufacturing services. As the Sr, Manufacturing Engineer involved with special projects, Richard assists in the evaluation of new equipment and processes, along with supporting the facility requirements. More...

For Richard, the IPC shows were , "… the ideal place to see competitive equipment, operating virtually side-by-side, and become aware of new equipment while identifying new suppliers."

"We expect to reduce our bar solder expenses significantly this year because of a discovery we made at APEX! We had heard about a dross elimination chemical but hadn't seen it until I went to APEX. It was great to meet the supplier and learn more about it. We expect to significantly reduce the amount of bar solder we consume over the year, and it's applicable to both our tin-lead and lead-free solder pots."

"Like most PCB assembly houses, we've been adding considerable lead-free capable equipment to this facility, much of it was first identified at the APEX."

"No other show compiles the broad spectrum of equipment and information. In just a few days, the knowledge I gain from the show puts me "on top" of my profession and keeps my company competitive. My plan for 2008 definitely includes APEX!"

"At the risk of sounding corney … I believe the IPC shows and seminars is the ladder that keeps me on top of what is happening in the industry … and helps me keep my company competitive." Close
